Fish in a Tree Has a New Home Online

By Bridgette Hamstead

When we first launched Fish in a Tree, our website was simple by design. It was created to serve as a digital home for Fish in a Tree: Neurodiversity Community Center in New Orleans, a local hub where we gathered, learned, and began the work of building a more inclusive future together. That original site gave us exactly what we needed at the time: a place to share resources, post updates, and connect with our immediate community.

But a lot can happen in just a few years. Fish in a Tree has grown far beyond the literal and virtual walls of a single community center. What started as a local experiment has become a national and global endeavor: a center for education, advocacy, consulting, and activism, reaching across sectors to shape what comes next for the neurodiversity movement. And with that growth came an obvious truth, our original website no longer fit the scope of who we are becoming.

That’s why today we’re excited to share our brand new online home: www.fishinatreeGLOBAL.org.

The new name says it all. Moving from fishinatreeNOLA to fishinatreeGLOBAL reflects how far we’ve come, and where we’re headed. This isn’t just a website upgrade; it’s a marker of transformation. Our work is no longer only about one city, one space, or one organization, it’s about building infrastructure for neurodiversity justice on a much larger scale.

Fish in a Tree is now:

  • A hub for consulting and systems change work with universities, corporations, and institutions.

  • The launching ground for flagship initiatives like the Graduate Program in Neurodiversity Studies and the Board Certified Neurodiversity Consultant (BCNC) credential.

  • The home of global public programs like NeuroStage and the Neurodiversity Justice Bookshelf.

  • A platform for thought leadership, advocacy, and collective action.

In other words: we’ve grown, and our website needed to grow with us.

Even as we look outward, we’re not leaving behind the community that nurtured our beginnings. The original fishinatreeNOLA.org site is still live, and it can be accessed directly or through the “Community” tab on our new site. That history matters, it’s where we tested ideas, built relationships, and proved what was possible. Holding onto that archive is part of honoring our roots. Community programming is still available there as well.

The new site is very much a work in progress. In the coming weeks and months, new pages will roll out highlighting our initiatives, programs, and ways to get involved. Think of it as a living project, one that will expand as our movement expands.

And one lighthearted note: if anyone knows how to add photos to blog posts in Squarespace, please do let me know. (Even global-scale projects need a little help with the basics sometimes!)

We’re proud to be at this turning point, and grateful to the community that made it possible. The launch of fishinatreeGLOBAL.org isn’t just a milestone for us, it’s an invitation to join in what comes next. We’re building something bigger than ourselves, and we want you alongside us.

Come visit. Explore. And stay tuned. Wonderful things are on their way.
